The South Gym grows quiet as Volleyball begins to fall out of season, the banner hung high on the walls is to be embellished with another league title, and nets are stored back in the “Lady Argos” closet. League has ended for all levels; Varsity closes out as League Champs (9-1), JV League Champs (8-2), and Frosh (6-4). As we say goodbye to our Seniors and look forward to the advancement of our lower levels, we mark the 2017 season as another successful one before moving onto the Golden West Division. Varsity Co-Captain Nancy Nguyen (12) states, “This season has had its share of ups and downs, but at the end of it, I wouldn’t trade my teammates for anybody else.”
Not long after season had ended, our Varsity Girls Volleyball competed against Pomona Catholic in their first CIF round. In the 7th division, Pomona Catholic is ranked 9 whilst we rank 21; despite the challenging circumstances the ladies were going to face, Tiffany Chau (11) comments, “the huge improvements which led us to become League Champions” such as: mentality, teamwork, and energy, were going to be key factors that would ensure a great performance throughout CIF.
In the first set against Pomona Catholic, the energy was absolutely wild. The bleachers weren’t filled to the brim yet the magic was happening on court. With both the bench and the court cheering after every point, a 7 point lead in the set had taken place thanks to the tough serves, and they secured the first set (25-20). However, after the momentum died down after the first set, changing sides and starting the set with a moderate energy ended up costing the second and the third set (17-25), (21-25). Despite the loss in the previous matches when they have proven to be capable of shutting down Pomona Catholic, our lady Argos bounced back in a close set (25-23). Finally playing up to 5 sets, this time to 15, our Lady Argos fought hard and strong. The last set, they were leading 5 points however with minor
complications during the last stretch, lost (14-16).
Single elimination had taken our Girl’s Volleyball out of CIF during the first round, yet despite the
circumstances still had an amazing season and overall run. Co-Captain Edreana Madria (12) adds, “I’m immensely proud of every single one of my teammates and the remarkable things we’ve accomplished.” With CIF drawing to a close, we congratulate our Lady Argos for a great season!
