This past week, our District planted a tree in honor of our former Superintendent, Dr. Laura Schwalm. The ribbon cutting ceremony was held in front of many administrators and educators who were there to celebrate and honor Dr. Schwalm’s forty years of service to our district. In addition to the tree, she was given a copy of a yearbook created in her honor which was compiled by Jolin Tran (12) and Jennifer Dau (12) with photos and tributes from every school in the district. Dr. Laura Schwalm was an exceptional educator who had spent several decades at GGUSD, dedicating half of her lifetime teaching thousands of different students. She started off teaching career in 1972 and taught at Murdy Elementary, Sunnyside Elementary, Warren Elementary, Bolsa Grande HS, and Garden Grove HS. Also, she was a Principal at Bryant Elementary, and an Assistant Principal at GGHS. Dr. Schwalm revealed her own teaching philosophy during the interview: “Students experience the most success when they are taught by skilled and caring teachers.” She will be greatly missed.
